LOTR XXV: Why vendors do not book rare guests

We’re fresh off the 25th Legends of the Ring and I thought the lineup was particularly strong. Dory Funk Jr., the top name featured on this Superticket, is a rare, legendary name that hasn’t done a Northeast convention appearance in quite sometime.

Other rare names booked for this show included Eric Embry, Erik Watts, Tom Prichard, Ted Arcidi, & TL Hooper. In addition to those rare names, you had the opportunity so score rare tag team photo ops like the Heavenly Bodies and Fabulous Ones.

And you know what? Attendance for this show appeared to be way down.

Some people were upset that LOTR did not feature a “Platinum” level guest – though they rarely do for an October show. Others thought the Superticket lineup was weak, which I couldn’t disagree with more. Funk and Ken Shamrock are two iconic names. Bill DeMott has done one Big Event since his release from the WWE in 2015. Ivory appeared at the same Big Event, too, but nothing recent before or since.

I’ve often asked different vendors why they book the same guests over and over again and their answer is simple: because no one actually pays to meet rare names. Fans request rare names but, when it comes down to it, they gravitate to more familiar names.

The attendance for this LOTR is Exhibit A as to why promoters and vendors don’t fill out their guest lists with rare names.

Legends of the Ring XXV — REPORT

This was the easiest Legends of the Ring I’ve ever attended. No major cancellations, attendance seemed considerably down, and all of the talent I met were in great spirits. Plus, I got to see a bunch of friends and fellow Marked Out members (and readers of the blog) which is always awesome.

I love how these photos turned out and I owe it all to Jenna. She’s so beyond awesome. Love her endlessly!

Onto the report…

Taking a look at the Legends of the Ring lineup

We are less than a month away from Legends of the Ring XXV and I am beyond excited for this convention. It’s been over 4 long, long months since I’ve been to a wrestling convention and I’m eager to score some sweet autographs and photo ops.

A convention, in my opinion, is only as good as its guests. For example, I am beyond disappointed with the New York Comic Con guestlist. Lena Headey, who plays Cersei Lanister on Game of Thrones, canceled. Mark Hamill, the beloved Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, costs $250 for a photo op and $300 for an autograph. The rest of the guestlist is filled with names I don’t recognize or care to meet.

So with that said…how good is this Legends of the Ring lineup? Let’s take a look:

Meeting the Brain

Saturday, March 14, 2015.

I strode into the LaGuardia Plaza hotel for the very first time with my lovely girlfriend, Jenna, at my side. There was a long yet orderly line in the lobby. Staffers from the Big Event were handing out tickets to those who pre-ordered. Soon after, the line broke off with everyone darting straight into the main vendor room where wrestlers from all eras awaited them.

Instead, I made a beeline for a table stationed in the lobby. K&S Wrestlefest, one of the premier vendors in the wrestling convention game, were advertising appearances from some major names: “The Living Legend” Larry Zbyszko, the Bullet Club trio of the Young Bucks & AJ Styles…

But none of those names were bigger than Bobby ‘the Brain’ Heenan.

I purchased an autograph ticket to meet ‘the Brain.’ He was currently en-route to the convention, so I went off to meet the likes of Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, the Dudley Boyz, and more.

After a frenzied hour or two in a sea of humanity, my girlfriend and I fought our way back to the lobby. I was panicked.

Bobby Heenan was nowhere to be seen.

After re-checking the jam-packed vendor room, I came to believe that Heenan had cancelled his appearance.

Thankfully, I was wrong.

I spotted him sitting in the back corner of the lobby with one person on his line, a far cry from the dozens and dozens of people I expected to be on his line.

I approach  his table and I put my WWE Encyclopedia down and say, “Mr. Heenan it’s such an honor to meet you, would you mind signing this?.” He says something under his breath but I couldn’t understand what he was saying. “What was that?, Mr. Heenan?” He points to a stack of 8x10s on his table. “You’re only signing your 8x10s?” Heenan again says something while pointing to his 8x10s, only this time he’s pointing more empathetically at it. “I don’t understand, Mr…”

Suddenly Zbyszko, who was sitting next to him, says, “He wants you to call him Bobby, kid! Not Mr. Heenan!” Then I realized Heenan was pointing to his name that was printed on the 8x10s. I go, “Oh sorry, Mr. Heenan!” and he just throws his arms up and rolls his eyes at me before signing my encyclopedia.

I was a mere humanoid amongst the Brain.

Rest in Peace, Bobby. Thanks for the memories.
